       Pondicherry: The name Pondicherry is the oldest name and it was called at the time of colonial rule in India. And Later it was changed as "Puducherry".

       Puducherry: After the pondicherry has been anounced as union territory in 2006 it was changed as puducherry. so the current name is puducherry and it is an union territory.

       The word puducherry stands for NEW TOWN.
